Agate Geodes

Agate is classified as an igneous rock, which is rock formed from molten minerals and elements. Inside the earth's crust, near the surface of the mantle, you can find molten rock. Inside this, gas bubbles form and seismic forces push the molten rock away from the intense heat, where the molten rock turns solid around the empty gas bubbles.

Over thousands of years, ground water from the surface flows into the pockets, depositing various minerals in the rocks to form layers of agate crystals. It is a microcrystalline rock and often has pure crystals formed in the final stages of formation.

The age of a geode has never been proven because they form at different rates. Since the earth's crust is

approcimately 72% Silicon dioxide (SiO2) It is the main ingredient of an agate geode.  The crystals that

form inside  are usually quartz or amethyst

Quartz Crystals

Quartz occurs in nature when (SiO2) Silicon Dioxide crystallizes. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The color is caused by iron impurities. If heated amethyst becomes yellow or brown and is called Citrine. Sometimes if only half the crystal is heated another mineral occurs. This is half purple and half yellow and is called ametrine.
